Most bathroom cabinets hold at least one bottle labelled antibacterial, and most people buying it have never asked what that label is claiming. It sounds like an upgrade because stronger sounds better, particularly in a household with young children, or for anyone running a business where hygiene is part of the job.
The evidence is more interesting than the packaging. Antibacterial washes are useful in some settings and close to pointless in others, and the difference has nothing to do with how dirty your hands look. It comes down to what you’re trying to remove, how long you spend doing it, and whether the active ingredient gets any contact time to work with at all.
How antibacterial soap differs from plain soap
Plain soap does not kill much bacteria. It works mechanically: the molecules surround grease and the microbes stuck in it, and running water carries the whole lot down the drain. This is why the 20-second guidance exists. Lifting and rinsing takes time, and the average hand wash comes in closer to six seconds.
An antibacterial soap adds an agent intended to kill bacteria on contact. The catch is that contact time. Most active ingredients need considerably longer on the skin than a normal wash allows, which is why laboratory results and bathroom results diverge so sharply. Retailers such as Notino list the active ingredient and its concentration on the product page, which is a good deal more informative than the word printed on the front.
Bacteria, not viruses
The label describes exactly what it does. Colds, flu and norovirus are viral, and an antibacterial agent has no particular effect on them. Thorough washing with any soap does, because the mechanical removal works regardless of what is being removed.
Where antibacterial soap earns its place
Food preparation is the clearest case, especially after handling raw meat, poultry or eggs. Nappy changing is another. So is caring for someone with a wound, a catheter or a weakened immune system, and anyone working in food service, childcare or healthcare will find it written into their procedures for good reason.
In those situations the risk is specific and bacterial, and the extra margin is worth having. The same reasoning applies to shared washrooms in an office or a workshop, where a dozen people touch the same taps and door handle in the space of an hour.
For general household use several times a day, plain soap and decent technique will do the same job. There is also a reasonable argument for restraint. American regulators banned triclosan and eighteen other actives from consumer washes in 2016 after manufacturers could not show they beat plain soap and water, and concerns about antimicrobial resistance have not gone away since.
Frequent use of harsher formulas dries the skin as well, and cracked skin is easier for bacteria to colonise than intact skin. For most people that is a poor trade. If you are washing your hands twenty times a day, a mild soap and a hand cream will protect you better than a stronger bottle will.
Keep a bottle by the kitchen sink and reach for it when the job calls for it. For everything else the boring advice still stands: any soap, warm water, and long enough to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ twice.
